Natural and traditional

Grüner Veltliner and Riesling – just the way we like to enjoy them, too. That’s what we’re all about. We’re Katja and Joe Fischer. Welcome to our winery here in the Wachau Valley, on the right bank of the Danube. Or the really exciting side, as we like to say!

All of our wines are organic, and at the moment we’re switching to biodynamic production. That’s because we want to treat the areas that give our wines their personality – the Kirnberg, Kreuzberg, Frauenweingärten and Mugler vineyards in Rossatz and Rührsdorf – with as much care as possible. The vineyards are defined by the cool air from the hilly Dunkelsteinerwald woodlands, counterbalanced by the influence of the Danube.

In the cellar, we take a hands-off approach whenever we can. We use spontaneous fermentation, and our wines mature either in large barrels or small 500 litre barrels . They clarify all by themselves over time – which means there’s no need for filtering. This allows them to express the distinctive features of the region where they grow. As we said: just the way we like to enjoy them!

We  think the right bank of the Danube is the ideal spot for more adventurous types. Want to experience a whole new side to the Wachau? Then Rossatz is the place to be. And if you’re after spectacular views, just ask us about the cherry tree in the Mugler vineyard. You can see the Danube from there, with panoramic views of Dürnstein in the background. The best way to enjoy the view: just take a seat on the bench next to the old wooden hut. We’ve spruced it up nicely. And if you look closely, you’ll see it on our labels, too.
