Sustainable Austria

With vintage 2020 we are certified sustainable by Sustainable Austria. In the last years we concentrated more and more on ecological standards which goes in the direction of organic farming. The criteria of this certification is divided in to three key factors: ecology, economy and society:

climate neutrality
use of water
use of energy
use of equipment
soil fertility
high quality standards
social aspects
economic return

We are happy to be a part of it. Our way goes in the right direction.

Vintage report 2019

Cool climate wines in a warm year

After a very early harvest in 2018, the Winter was very average. Bud burst was in mid-April. Like last year, we were spared dangerous overnight frosts, except for one night in April, which caused a loss of 30% in four of our vineyards.

May was one of the coldest on record and experienced high rainfall. Flowering began in the beginning of June and ended mid-June, the same as in 2015. At this time everything looked like a normal year for the beginning of harvest. However the extremely dry June caused growing problems for our young vines. We were hopeful after a small amount of rainfall in July, but it was still very dry. The flowering was very good in general, some blossoms were not activated which was actually a good effect to create perfect loose grape bunches.

In August, there was some rain and the empty water stocks were partially replenished. September saw beautiful, warm, sunny days but also cool temperatures during the night – perfect conditions for the ripening process during this very important phase.

Harvest 2019 began on 18th September and we finished on 23rd October. We had great weather with almost no rain. The grapes were very healthy, beautifully ripe with only very little Boytritis. Therefore we had less picking days 27 days in total whereas in 2018 it took us 39 days.

We expect a great vintage, elegant and well-structured wines; very concentrated due to great physiological ripeness with a surprising high and fresh acidity. We are looking forward to it!

Falstaff Guide 2019/20

TOP Falstaff reviews: 95-94-93
Riesling Reserve with 95 points among the best white wines.

The new Falstaff Guide has been published recently and we are more than happy with the reviews. It is particularly great that our new wine - Riesling Reserve 2017 - has made it into the list of the best white wines. With 95 points, it is described as "mineral freshly structured" and "already very harmonious", promised with a "long ageing potential".

Once again, Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Kreuzberg 2018 has done well with 94 points - "powerful, dense, extract sweetness, elegant texture, crisp acidity, ..., shows length and tension, great ageing potential".

Other top ratings are Grüner Veltliner Frauenweingärten 2018 and Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Privat 2018 with 93 points each, as well as Riesling Smaragd Kirnberg 2018 and Riesling Smaragd Steiger 2018 with 92 points each.

Completion of the construction site

A very busy year with big constructions is now behind us. The new cellar was already finished in September 2018. Step by step we now finalized all the little things and subtleties. We are very proud of the results and still suprised of what is actually possible in such a short time.

Weinfrühling 2019

Although the weather forecast was not very promising, we were very thankful for all the guests who came on May 4th & 5th to our open cellar door. With our new tasting room, we had the chance to invite guests from the Burgenland, Weingut Wagentristl, who showed their white and reds.

2018 is now available!

Now available: Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Rossatz 2018!

The first wines of 2018 are bottled and are very promising.

Slightly lighter in alcohol than vintage 2017, the wines are firm, classic and very elegant with a bright fruit character.

Well balanced, sappy and a refreshing acidity results in great harmony.

Vintage 2018 - classic & promising

A very cold winter saw temperatures down to -15°C in February. This was followed by a very warm Spring with unseasonal temperatures at the end of April of up to 25 °C. Usually at this time of the year, we are often threatened and worried by frosty nights; fortunately we were spared that this year.

The warm weather resulted in an unusually early bud burst as well as an early flowering which began at the end of May. For comparison, in 2017 flowering started on June 5th, in 2016 on June 17th and in 2015 on June 10th. So this year it was about three weeks earlier than average.

The whole summer was hot and dry, however, not as dry as 2017. This year there was intermittent rainfall. Luckily we were not affected by the heavy hail damage at the end of July that occurred mainly in Spitz. The high precipitation (90mm/m²) in combination with the warm temperatures right at the beginning of the harvest, presented us with some extra challenges. High rot pressure (especially for Riesling) forced the use of strict and detailed selections – very labour intensive. Additionally low sugar contents in the grapes we had to play out a waiting game and be very patient.

At the beginning of the harvest (beginning of September), we struggled with hot and summery temperatures (very exhausting for all our pickers). Around the full moon (towards the end of September), there were a few very cold nights – perfect conditions for a great aroma development. The end of the harvest culminated in a lovely Indian summer – the best conditions for picking Smaragd grapes.

The conclusion after 39 days of harvest (5.9.-19.10):

We are very satisfied in terms of quality and quantity. The wines tend to be slightly lighter and more elegant than 2017 – fruit driven, tense and very promising.

2018 is the first vintage in our recently built wine cellar, the grapes are handled more gently, and the production is more efficient. This will have a positive effect on the quality of our wines.

By the way, it has also advantages to start earlier, because whoever starts earlier with harvesting, also finishes earlier.

Think big...

One bottle is not enough for you? You plan a party and have no idea what to offer? Christmas is just around the corner and you still look for cool presents?

Harvest report

After a very cold winter, compared to the previous one, bud burst appeared in a long term average. During the last week of April, pretty similar to 2016, some frosty nights threatend our vineyards again, but fortunately it became a little warmer with no damages on the vines. The whole spring weather was very dry, even the deeper regions in the soils dried out.

At this time, we started with the first important work in the vineyards: weeding. Therefore we remove unneeded shoots to get a breezy canopy. Due to a very dry and hot weather in the summer time, our irrigation systems were launched to help the vines as much as possible. From the middle of July to August our Grüner Veltliner vineyards got thinned out to increase the quality of the grapes and prevent some heat stress.

The harvest time started on the 15th of September, which was 10-14 days earlier than normal. During the first three weeks, we picked the grapes for our Federspiel series. At the beginning the picking itself occuried pretty fast because of very healthy grapes. After some rainy days during the first week of October, some grapes very affected by botrytis and from then on, detailed selection was necessary, to still bring healty grapes into the cellar. The harvest for our Smaragd series happened from the second week of October on. A late indian summer stopped by, so we needed to pick quickly to prevent too high sugar contents in the must.

On the 25th of October, just one day before national holiday, we finished our harvest with lots of smiles. Quality and Quantity are great....

Harvest report 2016

The vintage 2016 began with an average winter, followed by a moderate bud-break season. In end-April we were affected by frost, which lasted for almost one week. It caused immense damage throughout Austria. Immediately thereafter, we estimated around a 30% loss.

Summer was dominated by rainy days with high temperatures during night – ideal conditions for downy mildew. Plant protection was extremely labor intensive and time consuming. Nevertheless, we could not prevent losses in volume and damage to the grapes completely.

The month of September was beautifully warm – consistently reaching temperatures up to 30 degrees or higher. October continued rather wet with many rainy days which forced us to take several harvest breaks. However, after 26 harvest days, we finished at November 5th. Despite the slightly smaller volume and an extremely work-intensive year, the quality in terms of must weight and acidity is very promising and we expect firm and vibrant wines. We are looking forward to a great 2016 vintage.

Late frost in April 2016

Unfortunately we don't always have good news:

During the week from the 25th of April to the 1st of May 2016 we experienced some cold nights under 0° Celsius in the Wachau Valley. So young shoots of a size of approx. 1 - 2 cm got highly damaged, the result is a loos of nearly 100% of fruit.

Unluckily, lot's of our vineyards got damaged too. To form an estimate about how big/small the vintage 2016 will be, we need to wait one or two more weeks. Then we will probably see, if half frosted shoots start growing again.

Let's hope for the best...

Anyway, we took some great photos while protecting the grapes:
